Life after Liberation Exhibition

Jersey Museum

This exhibition will examine the challenges that islanders faced after they had been liberated after five years of German Occupation.

It will explore both the challenges and opportunities and traces the island's long road to recovery.

This week long exhibition will have have memorabilia and photos​ on display, as well as recorded memories of the Occupation.

Walks at 10:30am

 

This actor-led walk through St Helier celebrates the Jèrriais language and is one of a number of events being held by Jersey Heritage to mark Liberation 80. Please see https://www.jerseyheritage.org/liberation-80/

The Cavern Beatles Liberation Special
8th of May | Royal Yacht Hotel
7:00 PM

In 1963 they visited Jersey for 4 legendary shows at Springfield Stadium on the 6th, 7th, 9th and 10th of August 1963. Over 60 years on, The Cavern Beatles, a band fully endorsed and licensed by the same club will be coming to The Drift with their remarkable show and to celebrate 80 years of the Liberation of Jersey.

Liberation Day Breakfast
9th of May - St Helier Town Hall

The annual breakfast buffet welcoming islanders who lived on the Island while it was occupied.

Liberation Day Church Service
9th of May | St John's Parish Church
9AM

All are welcomed to a special service recreating and celebrating the events of the 9th of May 80 years ago.

​

The service will then be followed by a flag raising ceremony.

JSAC 5K Run for Freedom
9th of May | West Park
9AM

An out and back course from the 1st lay-by at the wooden shelter to just past Bel Royal & back.

Check in from 7.20am to 7.50am.

Free entry for members. £5 for non-members. 

All runners will receive a commemorative race number celebrating the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day. This will be given out at check-in on the morning of the race.

Liberation Day Service 
9th of May | Liberation Square  
Starting 10AM

The ceremony will include addresses from the States Assembly, a re-enactment of the arrival to liberation square, musical performances and a thanksgiving service delivered by The Dean of Jersey, celebrating 80 years of liberation.

March Past and Motorcade
9th of May | Liberation Square
12PM

Uniformed organisations will take part in a march past in front of the Pomme d'Or Hotel at the conclusion of the service of thanksgiving.

A motorcade of vintage vehicles from the Jersey Old Motor Club and the Jersey Military Vehicle Group will then proceed out of town, along the Coast Road, Past La Rocque, Gorey, St Martin's Church, Trinity Church, St John's Church and finishing opposite La Fontain Tavern in St John

Liberation Day Party

Celebrations continue at Weighbridge Place where islanders are invited to a free Liberation Day Party including music, dancing and local food stalls.

Special Liberation 80 Boat Tour

Set sail aboard the elegant Jersey Duchess for a unique and unforgettable journey commemorating the 80th anniversary of Jersey’s liberation. SS Vega Memorial Ceremony
9th of May | Royal Square
1:15pm

A service held to commemorate the aid delivered to the Island from the International Red Cross on the ship SS Vega.

Aid was supported by Switzerland, Sweden, Portugal, New Zealand and Canada. Diplomatic representatives will be attending on behalf of respective embassies and high commissions.

​

Individuals who were in receipt of the Aid in 1944 and wish to be identified are encourage to contact the Bailiff’s Chambers.

WN Millbrook Bunker Open Day
9th of May | Next to the Old Station Cafe on Victoria Avenue
2PM-5PM

WN Millbrook will be open for public viewing, boasting many original features and restored to what it would have looked like when operational.

The open day will also include interactive displays of genuine wartime artefacts, samples of rationed foods and Force 135 reenactors. Volunteer guides will be on hand to provide information and real accounts from soldiers who were stationed there.

Entry for adults is £6, children under 16 and CIOS members go free.

Slave Workers Memorial Service
9th of May | Westmount
3PM

The ceremony will remember the 101 foreign forced workers of different nationalities and average age of 31 years, who perished in the island during the Nazi occupation. The occasion will pay tribute to those service men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice to free the oppressed.

​

The event will be held in the presence of His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor, the Bailiff, Chief Minister and will also be attended by overseas officials and families of those affected.

Members of the public are warmly invited to attend.

Afternoon Tea
9th of May | St Helier Town Hall

St Helier residents are invited to the Town Hall on Friday 9 May from 15:00 for the Liberation Day Afternoon Tea.

Tickets will be available directly from the Town Hall from Monday 31st March.

Liberation Orchestra
9th of May | St Helier Methodist Church
7:30 PM

The Liberation Orchestra celebrate Liberation Day with a programme of classics, wartime songs and latin. The internationally acclaimed violinist Harriet Mackenzie takes you on a vibrant musical journey blending old and new with an exciting Latin American twist. Be knocked out by a new tango concerto and the Four Seasons of Buenos Aires.

Liberation 80 Family Fun Event
10th of May | St Saviour Recreational Ground
10AM

A Family Fun Event celebrating Liberation 80 in St Saviour, featuring a variety of engaging activities. Attendees can enjoy displays of vintage vehicles and tractors, meet their elected officials, and interact with special guests, including the Lieutenant Governor and several VIPs.

​

A highlight of the event will be a luncheon with individuals who lived through the Occupation, providing an opportunity to hear their personal experiences.

Family Fun Day
10th of May | St John's School
2PM

A ticketed event filled with entertainment, food, and fun.  You can bring your own picnic or enjoy food from local vendors. Feel free to come in 1940s attire or red, white, and blue.

Grouville Liberation Fun Day
10th of May | Grouville Common
11AM-8PM

A Grouville Family Fun Event celebrating Liberation 80, featuring a variety of engaging activities including music, food, The Band of the Island of Jersey at 2pm, bouncy castles, a children’s area, vintage vehicles and much more.

A highlight of the event will be a VIP Tea at 3pm for any Grouville Resident or Grouville connected persons who lived through the Occupation, providing an opportunity to hear their personal experiences.

St Martins Day of Fun & Celebration
10th of May | St Martin's Village Green
1PM-1:45PM

Family activities in the afternoon including competitions, games, scavenger hunt and lorry rides. A VIP Senior Citizens Tea Party by invitation only. A BBQ, Live Music and Dancing in the evening with tickets for sale at £20 per person and £10 for children.

Lindy Hop Jersey: Liberation 80 Dinner & Social Dance
10th of May | Best Western Royal Hotel

This special Liberation 80 dinner and social dance will be held at the Best Western Royal Hotel in David Place. There will be live music from the Brian White Jazz Quartet.

Jersey Chamber Orchestra
10th of May | St Helier Methodist Church

A gala night of film music from the second world war in a “Last night of the Proms” style evening celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Jersey. Stars include internationally renowned violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky performing Dvorak’s great violin concerto before Dambusters and the Great Escape.

Liberation 80 Sunday Service
11th of May | St Helier Town Church

The Dean of Jersey will lead Sunday service in St Helier Town Church that will conclude the formal commemorations of Liberation 80.

St Peter's Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea and entertainment provided to all Parishioners to celebrate Liberation 80.

 

Tickets are available free of charge from the Parish Hall.

Liberation Chamber Concert

An extraordinary evening of chamber music with artists from the Lincoln Centre New York. International pianist Wu Qian and friends will perform DvoÅ™ák’s great Piano Quintet, Rachmaninov’s passionate Elegiac Piano Trio, and Beethoven’s elegant String Trio in G major.

A free talk with Jersey Archive's Digital Access Manager, Harry Le Feuvre, will delve into some of the records from the period of the Occupation and Liberation, and how they can be accessed.

Writing for Liberation

Head to Jersey Archive and hear historian Mark Lamerton, who has written the definitive work on the Liberation.

His talk will explain the reasons for researching and writing about the Liberation of the Channel Islands, describe the signing of the terms of unconditional surrender, focus on the events on Jersey’s Liberation Day and give an overview on the subsequent arrival of the main body of Force 135.
